Attorney Referrals
Brett and Coats represents many clients in association with attorneys throughout the state. We value the relationships we have developed over the years with referring attorneys. We feel honored that other lawyers chose to associate with us on serious personal injury and wrongful death claims. We are willing to review and evaluate potential claims without cost or obligation to the referring attorney, including hiring expert witnesses when necessary to assist in evaluating the claim
There must be a well defined division of responsibilities when two firms associate on a case and it is not practicable to manage a case out of two offices. Therefore, when we associate on a case, we serve as lead counsel and take responsibility for all pleadings, discovery and settlement negotiations. We can also advance litigation costs. We have a line of credit with our bank exclusively for client costs and can advance up to $400,000 for litigation expenses. We welcome the participation of the referring lawyer in all aspects of the case.
All agreements relating to a division
of fees are governed by the Washington
State Code of Professional
Responsibility. In proposing a fee
arrangement, we consider such factors as
the nature of the case, the complexity,
the potential damages, the work already
done by the associating attorney, and
the likely costs to be advanced. We
welcome open discussions about fee
division and strive to be fair to all.
